Amouage Interlude Man: the smoke-and-chaos masterpiece, explained
October 2026 · Join CT Journal
Why Interlude Man smells like incense in a sandstorm, what changed in the reformulations, and who should wear it.

A composition built on dissonance
Interlude Man is deliberately unbalanced in the best sense: a huge burst of oregano and pepper over frankincense, amber and a leather-and-smoke base. It was conceived around the idea of interference and disorder, and it is still one of the most recognisable openings in modern perfumery.
Notes that matter
The published pyramid lists bergamot, oregano and pepper at the top; incense, amber and saffron at the heart; and leather, agarwood (oud), sandalwood and patchouli in the base. In wear, the incense-amber accord dominates from the first hour onward.

Concentration and ageing
Amouage discloses oil concentration and maceration times for its extraits and eau de parfums. Interlude Man in eau de parfum form is one of the house’s most projected scents; two sprays are usually enough.
Who it suits
Collectors who already own several friendly, crowd-pleasing scents and want one statement piece. It is loud, dry and architectural. In hot weather it can be enormous; in cold weather it is magnificent.
