Why Baccarat Rouge 540 costs what it costs

The jasmine-saffron-amberwood accord behind MFK’s most famous perfume, and how to check you are buying the genuine article.

Why Baccarat Rouge 540 costs what it costs

One accord, two houses

Baccarat Rouge 540 began as a limited edition celebrating 250 years of the Baccarat crystal house. Francis Kurkdjian built it around an amberwood-saffron-jasmine accord with ethyl maltol, giving the signature sweet, almost mineral glow that made the scent famous worldwide.

Extrait versus eau de parfum

The extrait is richer and denser, with a longer sweetness and more pronounced woody depth; the eau de parfum is airier and brighter. They are different compositions, not just different strengths, so sample the exact edition you plan to buy.

Buying the genuine article

Check that the brand, concentration and volume match the listing, that the batch code is intact, and that the seller sources from authorised distributors. Codes and packaging can be copied; a traceable supply chain cannot be faked.

Is it worth it

If you enjoy its glowing sweetness, it performs exceptionally and a bottle lasts. If you find sweet scents cloying, test Grand Soir from the same house for a warmer, more resinous amber instead.
