The first burn rule: how to get a luxury candle right from the start

Wax has memory

The first burn sets the candle’s future: let the melt pool reach the vessel’s rim — about two hours for most formats — or the wax will tunnel for the rest of its life. This single habit matters more than any other.

Trim the wick

Keep wicks at roughly five millimetres before every burn. A long wick burns hot, smokes and blackens the vessel; a trimmed one burns clean and slow.

Burn windows

Two to four hours per burn is the healthy window. Shorter burns deepen the tunnel; longer ones overheat the wax and dull the scent.

The great-candle exception

Multi-wick great candles behave differently: their five wicks create one broad pool quickly, so the first-burn rule is satisfied faster — but their output is enormous. Light them for rooms, not desks.
